5 Machines You Should Never Use At The Gym Without A Spotter

Safety Is Part of the Workout

Gym machines can make strength training feel more controlled, but that doesn’t mean every setup is risk-free. If anything, trying to tackle that stuff on your own is a recipe for disaster. A good spotter is your best friend, and they aren’t there to steal your glory—they’re there to help you train hard without turning one ambitious rep into a very memorable gym story.

Smith Machine Bench Press

The Smith machine bench press can seem safer than a regular barbell because the bar moves on rails, but that’s how people mistake the safety. That fixed path can create its own problems; if you fail near the bottom of a rep, the bar can pin you against the bench unless the safety stops are set correctly. Having someone around gives you extra protection.

Leg Press Machine

The leg press is common enough that some people think they can handle it, especially since it lets you move a lot of weight. However, that’s exactly why you shouldn’t treat it casually. When your knees are bent deeply and the sled is loaded, losing control can put serious pressure on your lower back, hips, and knees.

Hack Squat Machine

A hack squat machine supports your body, don’t get us wrong, but it also places a demanding load through your legs and spine. Once muscle fatigue kicks in, it can be difficult to drive the platform back up—the last thing you want is to discover that your legs have given out without someone nearby.

Shoulder Press Machine

The shoulder press machine looks approachable enough, but overhead pressing can get risky when the weight stalls above you. If your shoulders or upper back give out, lowering the handles safely may be harder than expected. A spotter can help guide the load down before your form suffers.

Assisted Pull-Up and Dip Machine

This machine can surprise you if the counterweight or knee platform moves unexpectedly, which is why it’s smarter to have a buddy on standby. During dips, tired arms can make it difficult to control the descent, and a spotter can keep the movement steady.
