If Your Mind Won’t Slow Down
Racing thoughts can make even a quiet moment turn into a never-ending nightmare. One minute you’re trying to relax, and the next you’re replaying a conversation, worrying about something, or just wondering why your brain has so much energy. The good news is that you don’t have to force your thoughts to disappear completely. Let’s go through a few simple steps that can help you get back on track.
1. Name What’s Happening
When your mind moves too quickly, gently label it instead of arguing with every thought. You can always say to yourself, “I’m having anxious thoughts,” or “My brain is trying to solve everything at once.” That distance can help you stop treating every worry like an emergency.
2. Write It Down
Never underestimate the power of journaling! Putting your thoughts on paper can make them feel less tangled. You don’t need a perfect journal entry, either, and you definitely don’t need neat handwriting. Just write down whatever is looping in your mind, then look for anything that can wait, anything you can act on, and anything you may need to let go of.
3. Focus on Your Senses
Your senses can pull your attention back into the present when your thoughts race ahead. Here’s what you need to do: notice five things you can see, four things you can feel, three things you can hear, two things you can smell, and one thing you can taste. It sounds simple, but it gives your mind something to hold onto.
4. Slow Breathing
Racing thoughts often come with a tense or restless body, so calming your breathing sends a message to your nervous system. Try breathing in for four counts, holding for a moment, and breathing out slowly for six counts. A longer exhale can be especially helpful when you feel riled up.
5. Create a Next Step
Sometimes your thoughts race because everything feels too big at once. Don’t try to solve the entire problem; choose one tiny next step you can actually get done. A smaller action gives your mind a sense of direction without asking it to carry a ton of bricks.
