Power Up Your Day
You probably already know that you shouldn't skip breakfast (a.k.a. the most important meal of the day), but if you're looking for an afternoon pick-me-up treat, don't go reaching for that bag of chips just yet. After all, processed snacks will only leave you feeling more sluggish. Wondering what to eat to keep your energy levels boosted? Eat these five foods instead.
1. Salmon
If you're looking for a lean protein to add to your plate, look no further than salmon. Rich in omega-3 fatty acids, it doesn't just offer heart-healthy benefits, but will also keep you fuller for longer and keep your energy levels boosted all day.
2. Tea
Whether you're a green tea or jasmine tea lover, a steaming pot of this aromatic beverage is sure to keep you energized. It doesn't need milk or sugar to be enjoyed (although you can add these ingredients to make it more palatable for you if you wish), and offers numerous health benefits, from lowering your risk of diabetes to preventing heart disease.
3. Beans
If you're not a fan of salmon and want another protein choice, legumes—think chickpeas, lentils, and peas—are a great pick. Beans, in particular, are packed with fiber and essential nutrients, such as iron and folate, that give your body the fuel it needs to power through your day.
4. Dark Chocolate
Surprised? You shouldn't be! Dark chocolate may sound like an indulgent treat, but it's much healthier than your regular, popular varieties (white and milk chocolate), making it a great pick-me-up snack. In fact, it can help improve blood flow, prevent oxidative stress, and even lower your risk of cardiovascular disease.
5. Water
If tea is too strong for your liking and you're avoiding caffeine, even a glass of plain water can keep your energy levels boosted. And this should come as no surprise: water is extremely important for our bodies to function smoothly and efficiently. Make sure you drink more than the recommended six to eight glasses daily; you don't want to end up dehydrated.
